PE

Byron Wood Academy is fortunate to have excellent facilities and resources, with which we can enjoy PE, sport and physical activities. Because of this, we want to create vast opportunities for our pupils to shine through both the curriculum and extended learning opportunities.

We believe in providing opportunities for our children to learn new physical skills and games, and encourage everybody to take part in sports festivals and competitive sport. In addition to this, we have been fortunate enough to provide possibilities for many children to enjoy real life experiences for the first time – representing their school in competitions, meeting and working with professional athletes and travelling to neighbouring cities to witness live sporting events.

Byron Wood Academy are active members of the Arches School Sport Partnership and Sheffield Federation for School Sport, collaborating with some of our local schools to enjoy friendly competitions together. The school has competed in athletics, basketball, badminton, cricket, dance, dodgeball, football, handball, netball, orienteering, sport hall athletics, and tri golf.

At Byron Wood, we have also developed strong links with external organisations such as The Skipping School, Sheffield United Football Club, the Yorkshire Cricket Board and Totally Runable – Astrea’s PE Leaders. With the help of these partners, we have developed our curriculum to support the development of our pupils, as well as creating as many opportunities for them to shine through physical activities. We want our children to aspire to achieve more, and believe that everybody has the potential to improve their personal bests and so we strive to give them the chance to.

In September 2017, we were awarded a Silver School Games Sportsmark Award, and a Bronze KS1 Sportsmark award in addition to the previous Bronze School Games Sportsmark in previous years. This was in recognition of our dedication to sport, PE and physical activity within the school for the last academic year. With our additional funding as part of the Government’s PE and Sports Premium directive, we have dedicated sufficient resources to improving our curriculum, building external links for children to take part in sport and ensuring a higher number of our pupils achieve the national curriculum requirements for swimming.
