Careers

In primary schools, we have a duty to broaden our pupils’ horizons, help them develop the skills that will enable them to have the widest opportunities, and to challenge the preconceptions and stereotypes that may restrict what they see as being possible.

At Byron Wood, we discuss the children’s aspirations with them and work to instil a love of learning which will lay strong foundations for their future.  Our PSHE lessons provide opportunities to discuss how to contribute to society, and how people choose a career path.  They also discuss prejudice and discrimination and how to deal with these.

Pupils are given experience of being given responsibilities, both within the class and through the Student Leadership programme.

The Careers Development Institute has produced an exemplar guidance of what Careers Education can look like in primary schools.  Byron Wood is developing its own offer, looking at what we already do, incorporating best practice and working to bring what we do in line with this guidance.
