The government made the teaching of Relationships Education compulsory for all children in Primary Schools. In Secondary Schools, this becomes Relationships and Sex Education, which is why the subject is sometimes referred to as RSE. However, at Byron Wood we have made the choice to only teach the Relationships Education aspect.
The focus of the Relationships Education curriculum is to put in place the key building blocks of healthy, respectful relationships, focusing on family and friendships, in all contexts, including online. This will sit alongside the essential understanding of how to be healthy.
Our Curriculum has been drawn up in consultation with a working group of parents, and is based on the recommended curriculum which was drawn up by Sheffield City Council with the support of different faith and community groups, charities, health authorities and education consultants. We have also taken into account feedback from our school\’s community, whilst ensuring that the National Curriculum content has been covered.
As this curriculum only contains the compulsory national content, children cannot be withdrawn from these lessons. However, teachers will endeavour to ensure that parents are kept informed as to what will be taught each term, so that children can be supported at home.
