Student Leadership

Pupil Voice is vitally important to the development of Byron Wood.  We value the opinions of our children, and use their ideas to inform our Action Plans and School Development Plans.  There are a number of ways children can be involved:

Children’s Leadership Team

Each class from Y2-6 elects members to become their representatives on the CLT.  This group meets regularly, collating the suggestions of their classes, and brings these to the meeting so they can be considered by school leadership.

The CLT selects members to lead further pupil groups.  Those which have already been set up are listed below, and their members have written a brief description of their roles:

Outdoor Leaders

Our role will be having responsibility for ensuring the children have things to keep them occupied during break and lunch time.  We hope to speak to pupils to find out about other equipment that they might like outside eg. Lego or art supplies.  We will take out equipment and bring it back in and ensure that everyone is looking after things and feeling happy with what we have.

Reading

Our role is to help children develop an enjoyment for reading.  We want to make sure that there are as many chances as possible for children to take part in fun reading activities so that they can be the best readers possible.

Newspaper

Our role is to create a newsletter for the pupils of the school so that classes can share information with other children in the school.  We want to make a newsletter that is fun to read and informative that all children can contribute to.

Dinner Hall

Our role is to make sure that pupils’ have a happy time in the dinner hall for their lunch.  We want to collect children’s thoughts and experiences about lunch times and share information about the expectations and any changes that are being made.

Learning Detectives

Our role is to observe classes during their teaching time and give feedback about their learning.  We will be looking for evidence about how they use talk partners, present their work and their focus.  We want to encourage children to think about their own learning.

Digital Leaders

Our role is to ensure that children understand how to use digital devices (phones, tablets, laptops, games consoles) safely and stay safe when online.  We want to ensure that all pupils in the school know what to do if any problems come up when they are online.  We want to work as a team to make sure that computing is being taught well in our school.

Eco-Warriors

Our role is to help everybody in Byron Wood think more about the environment during the school day. Within our team we are already sending out daily reminders to classes to turn off lights and devices.  We have set up a poster competition to raise the profile of looking after the environment.  We have made changes to the tuck shop and are selling fair trade products.  We are looking forward to joining Eco Conferences in the future and working with other schools across the Trust and city.

As well as these, children might be invited to become:

Play Leaders

At each playtime, older students support children in their play.  They manage the equipment, teach others how to use them and support games.  They help children find friends who they can play with.  Our Play Leaders receive training and support from school staff.  They also advise the school’s leadership on developments for our play periods and help their implementation.

All of our Children’s Leadership Groups have presented in a whole school assembly, so that all children know about the work that they are doing, and how they can share ideas for School Improvement with the School Leadership Team.
